Oil api sl

API operates a voluntary licensing and certification program that allows engine oil marketers to use the API Engine Oil Quality Marks if their products meet specific requirements. Service Category SL was first introduced in 2001 for use in gasoline engines and is not suitable for use in engines introduced after 2004.

As shown above, API "SA" oil was the first in the API Service Classification for gasoline motor oils. These oils were formulated for use in vehicles built prior to 1930. That's right, motor oil made for cars built nearly 80 years ago! Launched in 1993, API’s Engine Oil Program is a cooperative effort between the oil and additive industries and vehicle and engine manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler and those represented by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association. API Service Level Category API Service Level Category Since 1924, the American Petroleum Institute has been a cornerstone in establishing and maintaining standards for the worldwide oil and natural gas industry. This defines whether an oil is suitable for gasoline or diesel engines. API SN PLUS is the interim spec within the lubricants industry that supplements the API SN category for gasoline engine oil performance. It helps bridge the gap between current ILSAC GF-5 and future ILSAC GF-6 specifications. The manual for may 2003 1150GS says that I have to use oil API SF, SG or SH, CD or CE. with 20 W50 being the best option for my area (Southern California) I'm only finding oil with SL and CF sufixes an with SAE 10 W40 (mobil). Seams that nobody does Synthetic going up to W50 any more.

If an automotive owner's manual calls for an API SJ or SL oil, an API SM oil will provide full protection. For diesel engines, the latest category usually - but not always - includes the performance properties of an earlier category.
